We retrace early Islamic history by creating a citation network of 40k scholars who passed down Islamic statements over 300 years, from 632 AD to 1000 AD. By reconstructing the citations and using additional biographical information of these people, we are able to reveal unique insights about the nature of scholarship, biases and information diffusion in the early stages of Islamic history.
I initiated and co-lead the project along with Mairaj Syed, an associate professor of religious studies at UC Davis, and Behnam Sadeghi, UCLA. This is an ongoing research project started in 2011.
