Simulation of Low Energy Muon Transport and Channeling in Thin Films.
As an NSF REU program participant in my junior year of college, I investigated the presence of Muon beam Channeling in crystalline thin film samples by running simulations using the packages Geant4, TRIM and Marlowe and later writing a Monte Carlo simulation of the whole process in C++ and a set of visualization programs in Java and Mathematica to suit our needs. The program I wrote is named MuSCLE (MuonS Cascade at Low Energy) and the source code is available upon request. We devised and implemented several approximation algorithms based on the Binary Collision Approximation model and found a significant amount of Muons channeling through Body Centered Cubic crystal thin films such as Iron and Niobium. I have continued the research as my senior project at Bard College under the supervision of my REU adviser Dr. Kossler and my senior project Adviser Dr. Matthew Deady.
The above figure shows example particle tracks when muon particles are projected inside a crystalline structure, traced out from the output of our code MUSCLE. The red dot is the entry point for all particles.
